Lester Willis Young (Woodville (Mississippi), August 27, 1909 – New York, March 15, 1959) was a tenor saxophonist and clarinetist who is considered one of the most influential tenor saxophonists in jazz history. He received his nickname Prez or Pres (short for president) from singer Billie Holiday, after all the noble artist titles in jazz had already been given: King Oliver, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Earl Hines (Hines' real first name). Holiday, in turn, was nicknamed Lady Day by him. Lester Young played his instrument in a very unique way, light, airy and 'cool', in contrast to the then common technically virtuoso 'hot' style of Coleman Hawkins. He influenced many tenor saxophonists, although he himself had a very idiosyncratic style.
