Louis Soonius
1883 - 1956
Lodewijk (Louis) Soonius, woonde en werkte in Den Haag en in 1930 in Veur. Hij volgde zijn opleiding aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende kunst en hij was lid van de Haagse Kunstkring. Soonius schilderde vaak levendige en zonnige strandgezichten met figuren maar ook zeegezichten, stadsgezichten en soms dieren en vrouwelijk naakten. Naast een begaafd schilder was Soonius ook een getalenteerd tekenaar, waar dit werk een prachtig voorbeeld van is.
In de zomermaanden schilderde Soonius, net als zijn tijdgenoot Isaac Israels, het strand van Scheveningen. Omstreeks 1900 begon Scheveningen zich te ontwikkelen van een vissersdorp tot een mondaine badplaats. Hij schilderde 'plein air': spontaan en los.
