Markus Lüpertz is fascinated by figures from Greek mythology, which he often includes in his work as a single subject or integrates them into his pictorial compositions. Lüpertz spent many hours in the sculpture collection of Berlin's Bode Museum to find inspiration for his own works. The artist reinterprets the protagonists of mythological tales and depicts them in his distinctive personal style.
»Grazie« is unusual as a single figure, since she is traditionally represented as a group of three. As a figure from behind with outstretched arms and - contrary to conventional static pictorial tradition - here in motion, »Grazie« opens up space for one's own interpretations. The mythological figure, looking sideways from the picture, draws the viewer directly into the picture and makes him a participant in the imaginary scenery.
