- Mart Kempers was, among other things, a painter, graphic designer, draftsman and illustrator.
He was educated at the Applied Arts School in Amsterdam, what we now know as the Rietveld Academy. He was taught here by Mart Stam, among others, although Kempers later indicated that he did not fully agree with the Bauhaus philosophy. In the time after the Second World War he worked for some time as a graphic designer. During this time he made, among other things, 250 drawings for a new Bible edition of the Dutch Bible Society. After many years of commissioned work, he made his debut in 1973 as an independent artist in paintings and graphics. He taught illustration for many years at the Royal Academy in The Hague.
