About this lithograph (source: Escher in the palace):
In Three Worlds (1955) Escher combines his fascination for nature and reflections. The print is the result of the many walks in the woods that he regularly takes around his hometown of Baarn. The reflective water surfaces of ponds, lakes and mud puddles inspire Escher. In the print he connects three worlds in a natural way: the fish under water, the tree leaves on the water and the reflection of the trees in the water. He thereby creates a layered three-dimensional world on the flat surface.
