  • Metten Theunis ('Tenny') Koornstra (1912-1978) was born in Rotterdam in a strict Protestant, Calvinist environment. His father died during the First World War and he moved with his mother to Haarlem, where he would spend the rest of his childhood. The Christian school he entered there was a severe test for the boy, which would leave an indelible mark on his character, namely a deep-seated desire for independence.

Even during his unsuccessful school years, his artistic talents were noticed, but he did not want to commit himself to applied arts education due to his aversion to schools. Instead, he took on various jobs, including as a cook and confectioner, but also as a silversmith, salesman and decorator. At an early age he wandered through France, where he gained important impressions of modern art in the Parisian museums.

In 1939 Metten Koornstra learned the technique of lithography at the Rotterdam Academy with the graphic artist Derkzen van Angeren. In that year, an exhibition of his drawings was organized for the first time in the Amsterdam gallery De Ronde Brug on Reguliersgracht. After the war, in 1946, Koornstra bought an old litho press in Limburg, with which he started a workshop in his studio. With this he would make an important contribution to the flourishing of the Dutch graphic arts after the Second World War. With the help of Piet Clement, at the time a young apprentice printer, the company, Printshop 845 on the Prinsengracht, grew into a renowned institution where prominent artists from the Netherlands and abroad had their graphics printed.

Metten Koornstra, however, is best known to the general public as a decorator of the annual Boekenbal, which was the opening of the book week organized by the Association for the Promotion of the Interests of Booksellers. From 1947 until the 1970s, he gave shape to this event in an imaginative, cheerful way, which took place alternately in the Stadsschouwburg, the Concertgebouw and the RAI. Inextricably linked to the Boekenbals was also the musical accompaniment provided by the ensemble of his first wife, the violinist ('Stehgeigerin') Rita Dalvano. How popular Metten's decorations were is evident from the fact that towards the end of the balls they were torn from the walls by the partygoers and taken home.

However, Metten Koornstra did not limit himself to the Boekenbals. In the years after the Second World War he designed many theater sets, especially for the Dutch Comedie and the Rotterdams Toneel. Also of interest are the lithographs he made for the bibliophile edition of Aloysius Bertrand's 'Gaspard de la Nuit' and the book covers he designed, including for works by Hugo Claus. Later in life he devoted himself more to painting. With these works, which are characterized by their own, tranquil style, he has received the necessary appreciation.

From the versatile studio legacy, lithographs, documents, brochures, photos about Metten Koornstra, his circle of friends (by Cas Oorthuys, Bert Nienhuis, Paul Huf, and others) and of the decorations for the book ball, Sinterklaas parades, decors, and other decorations, have been donated to the City Archives. .
