Here is a beautiful 19th century painting, most likely by sea painter AP Schotel or by painter P. De Bruijn.
PJ Schotel was born in Dordrecht as the son of the famous sea painter Johannes Christiaan Schotel. It was clear that he had the same talent for drawing as his father. Ships off the coast, a schooner in the background His father was also his teacher. Jan's earlier paintings were less bright and above all much more dramatic. The brown and gray tones predominate. Travels to France in 1827/28 and 1829 gave his painting a somewhat warmer character. In 1830, Jan started working as a drawing instructor for the Royal Naval Institute in Medemblik. Jan was an expert when it came to the technical and historical details of the ships. Jan was a clear follower of the classical Dutch school. His works can be found in all kinds of museums in the Netherlands, especially ship portraits and seascapes. During this time, Jan married Marie Victoire De Veye. The couple's children inherit the talents of their parents, daughter Petronella Elisabeth Schotel (1834-1917) also became a painter. In 1850 he left the service in Medemblik and settled in Kampen for a few years, after which he left in 1860 for Düsseldorf, then an artists' center. In 1860 Jan Schotel moved to Dresden, five years later, in 1865, he died there.
