- Ronald Terpstra, geboren in 1948 te Amsterdam, kwam op zijn vijftiende jaar al in contact met de Amsterdamse schilder Jan Korthals die hem erg stimuleerde. Hij ontving na zijn eindexamen gymnasium zijn opleiding aan de Rijksacademie van beeldende kunsten te Amsterdam, waar hij onder andere les kreeg van de schilder Arie Kater.
- Tijdens zijn academietijd werd hem de Uriotprijs voor schilderkunst en de Kunstprestatieprijs van de Gemeente Amsterdam toegekend. Ook werd hij reeds toen als lid aangenomen van de kunstenaarsverenigingen “Arti et Amicitiae” , “de Onafhankelijken” en “Sint-Lucas”, waarmee hij sinds 1970 jaarlijks exposeerde in het Stedelijk Museum. Hij kreeg tevens adviezen van de bekende portretschilder Sierk Schröder.
- Ronald Terpstra voelde zich al van jongs af aan tot het portretschilderen aangetrokken en heeft tot nu toe dan ook een reeks portretopdrachten uitgevoerd, waaronder veel kinderportretten.
