He has developed a unique instantly recognizable style over the years. Jacobs derives the theme of his work from the conduct of mankind. He studies the people around him almost daily for inspiration. He is fascinated by people, their faces, their postures, their non-verbal behavior and their reactions to each other. He stores these facial expressions in his memory, goes to work with them and creates his own people: humorous, disarming and endearing. He has a keen eye for details such as a specific hand gesture or a glance. 'Faces and hands in particular show clearly what people are doing. Postures, hands, faces express best how people feel. It's not for nothing that these are important elements in my work', says Sjer. He depicts people in their daily lives. His human figures, however, are an abstracted amalgamation of several persons, whom he has observed. 'It's not about the perfect likeness, but about the mirror that I want to hold up to myself and the other. The viewers do not have a passive role in this. They have to evoke their own images in addition to my images. They should not only look at my images, but enter into a dialogue with them, as it were, and thus create a new reality'. Sjer regularly exhibits in galleries across the country. Furthermore, his work can often be seen in galleries in Belgium, Spain and the United States and he had a major exhibition in Paris.
