De kleurscheiding wordt handmatig gesneden uit de zinken plaat voor elke kleur. De kleuren worden één voor één aangebracht met een kwast. Dus voor elke kleur of schaduw wordt een aparte plaat gemaakt. De arbeidsintensieve pochoirtechniek wordt heden ten dage niet meer gedaan om redenen van een veel te hoge kostprijs. Matisse, Picasso en andere veelal Franse bekende kunstenaars hebben in de jaren 30-70 van de vorige eeuw werk gemaakt, welke in deze techniek is uitgevoerd. Matisse en anderen gaven de voorkeur  aan de pochoir boven de kleurenlitho of zeefdruk.
