Lernout was born in Geluwe on May 3, 1931. He learned drawing from his father Kamiel Lernout and painting at the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts of Menen, where he was taught by painters F. Wallecan and E. Van Overberghe.
After a long stay in Africa, Lernout settled in Tervuren in 1964. He worked in the advertising and press world until 1990. Lernout has exhibited his work annually since 1970.
He died at home, in Tervuren, on December 21, 2019.
