Very beautiful and perhaps most sought after Amsterdam etching by Witsen. Etching with aquatint, pencil signed lower right. Numbered 43 lower left. Image size 45.7 x 61.8 cm. Sheet size 58 x 71.5 cm. Loose-leaf. Literature: Catalog De Groot no. 109, Boon no. 103 and Van Wisselingh no. 434. The edition was 20 proofs numbered I to X and Van Wisselingh edition (Oude Schans I) nos. 21 to 100. Willem Witsen was born in Amsterdam on August 13, 1860 and died there on April 13, 1923. Education at the National Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam. Student of August Allebé. Teacher of Dirk Harting and Willem Hofker, among others. Besides working in the Netherlands, he worked in London, Venice, San Francisco and Indonesia. Was one of the so-called Eighties and very friends with Georg Hendrik Breitner. Painter, watercolorist and graphic artist. Particularly known for its Amsterdam cityscapes.
