Joep van Lieshout (1963)

Artist

Joep van Lieshout (Ravenstein, 1963) spent his secondary school period in Oss and subsequently studied at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. He makes objects that are located on the border between visual and applied art. Because his objects are often functional, he (consciously) causes confusion among the viewer of his work.

Since 1995 he has been performing his work under the name Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL). AVL is a group of artists and employees based in Rotterdam, with whom he performs his free work and assignments.

In the summer of 2006, Van Lieshout was a guest in the television program Zomergasten.

In 2006 he was commissioned by the SP to make a trailer in the shape of a huge polyester beef tomato, the SoeP-mobile, from which tomato soup – based on a recipe by Johannes van Dam – can be served to hungry people and passers-by.
