Sybren Valkema (1916-1996) worked as a glass artist, ceramist, sculptor and textile designer. He learned to draw at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in the 1930s. Then he came into contact with Andries Copier. At the invitation of Copier, Valkema worked as a teacher at the Glass School Leerdam, where he taught, among others, Willem Heesen, Floris Meydam and Gerard Thomassen. Later Valkema worked as deputy director at the Institute for Applied Arts Education (later: Gerrit Rietveld Academy). From the 1940s to the 1960s he worked as a freelancer and designed utility glass, unique pieces and serica for the Glasfabriek Leerdam. During the same period he also experimented with ceramics at De Porceleyne Fles in Delft. In 1964 Valkema became co-founder of the World Crafts Council in New York, in 1969 he set up the glass department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.
Through his involvement in glass art and education, he ensured the further development of glass art in the Netherlands and beyond. Moreover, Valkema was one of the first to have a small studio glass kiln that could be moved, so that the glass artist was no longer tied to the glass industry but could work from his own studio. After his retirement in 1980, he continued to experiment in his colleagues' studios.
