#Barbizon School The Barbizon School consisted of a group of French painters who saw the 17th century Dutch landscape painters as inspiration. They painted in the vicinity of the French town of Barbizon. The group was especially important because they were the first to focus solely on nature and the landscape, which had always served as a backdrop. Moreover, they no longer idealized the landscape. The paintings of the Barbizon School are painted in a simplified manner, without much decoration. The painters went out and painted directly outside in nature. Because of this, they were also regarded as precursors of Impressionism.
