Gustaaf Armand Eugene Baag (Paramaribo 1941 - Amsterdam 2001) was born in Paramaribo, Suriname.
-Education: From 1955 he took drawing lessons at the Cultural Center Suriname (CCS) in Paramaribo. He was taught by the artist Nola Hatterman (1899-1984). In 1961 he went to the Netherlands and studied at the art academy in Tilburg. He then continued his education at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam.
He forms a dance duo with his then wife, ballet dancer Willy Collewijn . Armand Baag also painted during their tours and finally settled permanently in Amsterdam from 1968.
He exhibited and was friends with other Surinamese artists, including Erwin de Vries and Quintus Jan Telting . In 1970 Armand Baag and Willy Collewijn founded the Maysa Foundation , a cultural breeding ground in Amsterdam's Jordaan. In 1971 he was also involved in the establishment of the Galerie Srefidensi ('independence') in Amsterdam. The gallery focused on the presentation of Caribbean artists, who had little opportunity to show their work to the Dutch public.
In addition to being a visual artist, Armand Baag was also a composer, lyricist, singer, performer and musician. He made figurative art, but also experimented with abstraction ideas. For example, he tried to capture winti in a few works.
Art historian Bart Krieger "When I look at the entire oeuvre of Armand Baag, it was his mission to portray Afro-Surinamese history".
