Gerard Altmann was born in Rotterdam in 1877 and died in Rotterdam in 1940.

The painter Gerard Altmann was a Rotterdam painter. He was a follower of the Hague School. Student of the Academy v. BK in Rotterdam from 1901 – 1904, and of Jan de Jong, Ferdinand Oldewelt and Jan Striening.

Altmann often painted polder landscapes with cows and sheep, sometimes also portraits, still lifes and interiors.

The painter Gerard Altmann has worked extensively in the Kortenhoef area since the early 1900s. He went out here with his painter friends Louis Stütterheim and Cornelis Vreedenburgh. They never got tired of the multitude of motifs that the Kortenhoef landscape had to offer them. Altmann painted his often traditional and highly praised landscapes in the style of the Hague School, usually decorated with cows, but sometimes also with windmills or houses. He also made a number of portraits and still lifes.
