Hendrik Jacobus Valk (Zoeterwoude, January 12, 1897 - Arnhem, September 3, 1986) was a Dutch painter. In terms of style and interests, there are similarities between Valk and the members of the artists' group De Stijl, of which Theo van Doesburg was the founder, but he refused to join the group. In addition to his painting work, he was also a valued teacher at the ArtEZ University of Applied Sciences in Arnhem for many years. He also signed his work with the names Jan van Spar, Jan Spar and Jan van Breem.

Biography
Hendrik Valk was born in 1897 in Zoeterwoude. In 1916 he obtained his MO - Hand and Rectilinear Drawing at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. In the same year he starts working as an art teacher and spends the whole summer in a sod hut in Stroe, where he makes various sketches. He lives for a short time in a farm in Wassenaar. He builds a caravan there and takes it to Groningen, where his brother Willem Valk (sculptor) lives.

Between 1917 and 1920, Valk rented a studio at the Posthoflaantje in Leiden. In 1920, Theo van Doesburg offers him his studio on the Galgewater in the same city. From 1922 to 1926 he lives and works in addition to Wassenaar alternately in Katwijk aan Zee, Marum (Groningen) and Veere.

In 1926 he moved to Arnhem and started working there as a teacher at the Art Practice Society (the current ArtEZ), to which he would remain connected until 1957.

In 1928 he marries Tatjana Kotschergina. They have two children. During the war he lives from 1944 to 1945, as an evacuee, in Garderen. After the war he returns to Arnhem and discovers that much of his work was destroyed during the battle of Arnhem.

Valk participated enthusiastically in Arnhem's cultural life, as an initiator, critic and performer. With his striking personality and numerous activities, he was noticeably present in the cultural life of Arnhem at that time

In the sixties he made several trips to France, Switzerland and Italy to work there. In 1973 he receives an honorary exhibition in the Arnhem Municipal Museum. Between 1973 and 1979 he exhibits in Amsterdam, Leiden, Franeker, Middelburg and The Hague. In 1986 he dies in Arnhem.

In addition to being a gifted artist, Valk was also an excellent teacher. Many of his former students remember Valk as strict and critical, but above all as an enthusiastic source of inspiration.

He was the teacher of, among others, Pieter PM Barten, Jan Brugge, Hubert Estourgie, Madeleine Geuljans, Kees van Lent, Joop Haffmans, Kees Bastiaans, Emile Puettmann, Ben van London and Max Velthuijs.

Work
Hendrik Valk was a versatile artist: watercolorist, goldsmith, illustrator, draftsman and theater designer. He painted trees, representations of figures, nudes, cartoons, landscapes and self-portraits.

He belonged to the artists who clung to the perception of visual reality as the starting point for their work, but who renounced realism. In terms of style and interests, there are similarities between Valk and the members of the artists' group De Stijl, of which Theo van Doesburg was the founder. However, Valk did not want to be guided by an ideology or group. Moreover, he could not agree with the exclusion of depth and perspective advocated by De Stijl.

Valk used the same abstraction method as Van Doesburg. Both assume a naturalistic representation, after which more and more details are omitted. However, Valk has always allowed visual reality to play a recognizable role in his paintings. In this respect, Valk's work also resembles that of Bart van der Leck.

The same goes for nature. By accentuating the core lines, reality remains visible. This is how he painted the landscape at Stroe: a flat landscape with two bosses. The sky is tinted in various colors. Or haystacks, also at Stroe. Wavy planes in green, with haystacks in yellow and lilac on the horizon. Or red flowers in a vase, geometrically represented. Only the contours are visible with black lines.

Inspiration and teacher
From 1926 to 1957, Valk was a teacher at the secondary school for visual arts, industrial art and architecture of the Arnhem Teekengenootschap 'Art exercise' and later at the Academy for visual arts, the current ArtEZ college for the arts.

ArtEZ awarded the De Hendrik Valk Prize every two years until 2016, to an artist who, in line with the ideas of Hendrik Valk, is able to develop and shape an artistic idea in the simplest and most original way possible. to give. The prize consisted of a cash prize of € 2,000 and a graphic work by Hendrik Valk.
