Jaap Bouhuys - Sailboats at sea

Jaap Bouhuys was a versatile artist with an immediately recognizable style. He made mosaics, statues, stained glass windows and monumental wall paintings. He gained a lot of inspiration in the south of France and Italy.

In 1936 he painted the walls of the Dutch pavilion for the world exhibition in Paris. A little further on, Picasso was working on his Guernica. Both appeared to be looking for the same expression and had contact with each other.
Bouhuys was married to the sculptress Nel Klaassen. The class of their artistry was rewarded when both won the Prix de Rome.
