Jaap BOUHUYS
Painter, sculptor, monumental artist
Born in Arnhem in 1902. Died in Haarlem in 1983.
Education: Jaap Bouhuys was educated at the Arnhem Art Academy, where he was taught by Roland Holst and HP Berlage, among others. He also attended the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.
A clear influence of Cubism can be seen in Bouhuys' work? he even collaborated with Picasso. However, his cubist compositions have a typical use of color. Bouhuys therefore made his own paint from oils and pigments. He and his wife Nel Klaassen often collaborated on each other's art. Their works therefore have a related style and are easily recognizable. Despite the high quality of his work, Bouhuys has never achieved great fame ? however, he didn't put much effort into this himself.
Exhibitions and prizes:
In 1932 Bouhuys received the silver medal for monumental painting of the Prix de Rome.
