Jan Montyn (actually: Montijn) (Oudewater, November 13, 1924 – Amsterdam, August 10, 2015) was a Dutch painter, draftsman, graphic artist and poet. His work can be found in, among others, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Montyn was born in 1924 in a strict Reformed family. His father was a house painter, deacon and voted SGP.
During the Second World War, Montyn became a member of the National Socialist National Youth Storm. With that he went on a training camp in Austria. After this he signed on with the Kriegsmarine, where he experienced a shipwreck that he barely survived. After this disaster he was sent to the Eastern Front to serve in the trench warfare in Courland.
After the Liberation he reported to the Foreign Legion. He was trained as a paratrooper in Algeria to be deployed against Japan. After a short time he decided to escape. Back in the Netherlands he was no longer accepted as a collaborator in his former environment and in 1950 he became a volunteer with a Dutch army group in the Korean War.
Back in the Netherlands, his past in German military service was considered to be compensated, but he nevertheless fell into a psychological crisis. The extensive writing of what he experienced brought him back on his feet. Since then he has been painting and became internationally known. He passed away in the summer of 2015 at the age of 90.
