Johan d. Scherft started an art gallery, where graphics by, among others, J.Ensor, Picasso, P.Citroen and W. Rozendaal were exhibited. The special thing about Johan's company was the good relationship with graphic artists who had their work printed there, such as Dirk van Gelder and Thijs Mauve. In 1943 the company came to an end: the Germans advanced except for the etching press after the entire contents of the printing house. After a stay in Zeist, where he made etchings for much-needed income, he returned to The Hague in 1954 and started plate printing company Scherft, which acquired a large clientele.
