Haring drew the drawings for the etchings on copper plates in his studio in New York. Burroughs wrote 16 sheets of text by hand, which were printed in red ink. The text of The Valley is a chapter from William S. Burroughs' 1987 novel The Western Lands. This story, about people living in a crack, not knowing where they came from or where they went, is both absurd and recognizable. This was Keith Haring and William S. Burroughs' last collaboration, as Keith Haring died of AIDS a few months later in February 1990.
