Sarong [Tapis Kaca]. LAMPUNG, SOUTH SUMATRA, Indonesia, First third of the 20th century

A ceremonial holiday wrap skirt (sarong)
Consisting of alternating dark brown, orange and mustard yellow stripes and horizontal stripes, embroidered with (originally) silver threads in geometric motifs on a striped base, decorated with countless round mica sequins called 'cermuk'.
Composed of two equal parts, excellent condition, silver unfortunately weathered due to age.
A long apron consisting of a sewn cloth wrapped around the hips is called "tapis" in Lampung.
Motifs were embroidered in silver thread into the striped cotton fabric. There is also glittery material sewn onto the fabric: numerous pieces of mica, called “cermuk”. The more embroidery was applied to a fabric, the greater the status of the woman who wore the tapis.
