Rik van Iersel is autodidact. Hij heeft een reeks exposities achter zich, waarbij telkens eigenzinnige catalogi verschenen. Van Iersel is zeer nieuwsgierig naar materialen, naar media en naar het leven zelf. Als achttienjarige ontwerpt hij affiches voor popconcerten van de Effenaar. Hij tekent strips, drumt in Der Junge Hund en maakt zijn eerste grote kleurrijke expressionistische schilderijen. “Niets is van mij, alles komt van iets of iemand” zijn woorden van Rik van Iersel die zijn fascinatie illustreren voor de wereld om hem heen en deze fascinatie uit hij in zijn werk.
