• Roger Chailloux (The Hague, February 7, 1931 - Amsterdam, November 20, 1977) was a Dutch graphic artist, painter, set and costume designer.

Life and work Chailloux spent the first half of his life in France. In 1946 he returns to the Netherlands where he attends secondary school. He wants to become an architect. Roger himself attributes the fact that he cannot realize this idea to a lack of mathematical capabilities. Anyone who later sees his theater montages will find that practical mathematical insight is widely available. From 1953 to 1959 he studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He followed the Drawing department with Gé Röling and Painting under the direction of Otto de Kat for three years. Afterwards he is a student at the department of Visual Arts in Architecture, mainly with the Swiss monumental painter Prof. W. Clénin. As a graphic artist, Roger Chailloux is self-taught. Between 1956 and 1973, Roger Chailloux designed sets for 'Toneelgroep Puck' (later called Toneelgroep Centrum). In 1958 he took part in the exhibition on the occasion of the opening of the new auditorium (designed by Gerrit Rietveld) in the Rijksakademie. In 1959, Roger Chailloux produced five paintings in historical style for the film 'De Lage Landen' by filmmaker George Sluizer. In 1959 he had his first solo exhibition in the Rotterdam Art Circle and took part in the 1st Biennale for young artists in Paris. Founding of the group 'Atol' (1959-1961). Chailloux settles in Amsterdam. In 1960, he participated in the XXXth Venice Biennale and in the exhibition 'Hollandais d'Aujourd'hui' in Paris. In 1961 Chailloux received an honorable mention at the International Graphics Exhibition in Ljubljana. He illustrates the bibliophile edition of 'Le Chef d'oeuvre inconnue' by Honoré de Balzac for the De Roos Foundation in Utrecht. Around 1964 he joined the Scorpio Group, including Frans de Boo, John Grosman, Guillaume Lo A Njoe, Ad Molendijk, Karl Pelgrom, Jan Sierhuis, Pierre van Soest, Aat Verhoog and Leo de Vries In 1971, Chailloux decided - parallel to the Aktie Tomaat - to end his work for the theater. He wants to focus more on graphics again. In 1972 he illustrated the bibliophile edition of 'La vengeance d'une femme' by Jules-Amédée Barbey d'Aurevilly on behalf of the De Roos Foundation. He will teach at the Rijksakademie of Amsterdam. In 1973 he was appointed professor in the Free Graphics department. In 1974 he worked on his last theater montage 'Cyrano de Bergerac', directed by Ko van Dijk Jr.. In 1977, Roger Chailloux died on November 20 after a long and incurable illness. Roger Chailloux's work is in private collections and the collections of, among others, the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Rotterdam. In America, his work is represented in the collections of, among others, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and The National Gallery of Art in Washington.
