  • Beeldhouwer, schilder, tekenaar en graficus Theo Niermeijer was een hedendaagse mysticus. Hij volgde opleidingen in Amsterdam, Antwerpen en Warschau. Tijdens reizen naar het verre Oosten raakte hij onder invloed van de Chinese en boeddhistische filosofie.

    Op zijn werf op het Zeeburgereiland bij Amsterdam en in het noordfranse dorpje Plomion assembleerde hij oud ijzer tot sculpturen met een symbolische en meditatieve lading. Roest, ofwel de inwerking van de tijd, was daarbij een essentieel uitdrukkingsmiddel. Zelfs in zijn werk op papier maakte hij daarvan gebruik: de karakteristieke 'roesttekeningen' zijn afdrukken van zijn beelden en andere metalen voorwerpen onder invloed van regenwater.
