THILO MAATSCH (1900-1983) komt al op zeer jonge leeftijd in aanraking met kunst, o.a. van Die Blaue Reiter (Macke, Kandinsky, etc.). Hij volgt een schildersopleiding en doceert al vanaf 1924 aan het Bauhaus in Weimar, waar hij vriendschappelijke banden aangaat met mensen als Moholy-Nagy en Oskar Schlemmer. Hij leert door zijn vrienden en kunstverzamelaars Kandinsky en Paul Klee kennen.Eind 20-er jaren wordt hij lid van de "November-Gruppe" en het "Verband Bildender Künstler Berlin".
