Alvar Aalto (1898-1976)
The Finnish designer Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) studied at the Helsingin Teknilien Korkeakoulu in Helsinki. During his career he worked as a designer of exhibitions, objects, spaces and buildings. But he may have gained most fame with his revolutionary furniture designs. Aalto experimented with plywood, plywood and veneer. Together with his wife, designer Aino Aalto (née: Marsio), and Otto Korhonen, he worked on techniques for bending different types of wood. From these experiments a number of innovative chair designs emerged that offered a new solution for connecting vertical and horizontal elements. The team devised a way to attach legs to a seat without a frame. The success of these designs led the Aaltos to start their own production company in 1935: Artek.
Characteristic of Aalto's design style is the use of natural materials. He turned away from man-made materials because they would not be in accordance with man's needs. By using natural materials, Aalto tried to meet the functional and psychological requirements that a design should have according to him. Alvar Aalto's designs have had a lot of influence on making modernist visual language accessible to the general public.
