Jan van der VAART (The Hague 1931 - Leiden 2000)
Jan van der Vaart was a Dutch ceramist who played an important role in the development of the field in the second half of the twentieth century. He studied at the Free Academy in The Hague, after which he started his own studio. In the early 1960s, Van der Vaart came into contact with English ceramics and eventually became a founder of abstract-geometric ceramics in the Netherlands. From 1968 to 1991 he taught at the Rietveld Academy. There he was closely involved in the establishment of the glass department. Van der Vaart worked on unique objects as well as multiples and series.
