Confrerie Pictura

Founded in 1656 - dissolved in 1849

Confrerie Pictura

Confrerie Pictura was an artists' society in The Hague. The society was founded after some members of the Guild of Saint Luke in The Hague believed that the guild was unable to take the correct security measures against the painters who had fled from the Southern Netherlands. The Confrerie Pictura therefore had the aim of protecting the Hague painters and strengthening the mutual ties. Some members of the Confrerie Pictura founded the Haagsche Teekenacademie in 1682, which was intended to give the members of the Confrerie the opportunity to further develop their drawing skills. In this way they wanted to give painting The Hague a more international allure.
