In 1936 won Alvar Aalto met zijn serie glazen vazen de eerste prijs in de Karhula-Iittala wedstrijd voor glasdesign. Vergeleken met de decoratieve objecten in die tijd was de eenvoudige en tegelijk natuurlijke vorm revolutionair. De vaas, die is geïnspireerd op golven (het Finse woord is 'aalto') in het water, is een symbool van Fins design en één van de beroemdste glazen objecten ter wereld.
Elke vaas uit de Alvar Aalto Collection wordt ook nu nog in de Iittala fabriek met de mond geblazen en wordt in een groot aantal maten geleverd. De collectie is een pijler van modern Scandinavisch design en de meest iconische serie van Iittala.
