About the artist:
Born in 1945 in Twello.
Eva van Steenbergen's work is layered and personal. “ My inspiration always comes from my immediate environment. I must be touched or moved by an image or event. In this way my work automatically becomes autobiographical. I have always been a big fan of Matisse, Picasso, Kandinsky and the Cobra group. Later on, my greatest love went out to the art of the mentally handicapped and psychiatric patients, the 'outsiders'. These people always remind me that anything is possible!”
Eva originally painted on paper. At the end of the sixties she started painting on linen. “I had a large workspace then, which allowed me to make paintings larger. I have been painting on paper in a mixed media for at least ten years now. That suits me best for now.” When Eva van Steenbergen was sixteen years old, she went to the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. In 1966 she graduated and received the encouragement prize from the city of Amsterdam. In this city she exhibited her work for the first time. Galleries in other cities followed a few years later. Her work is included in various municipal collections.
