  • Ger Lataster is a Dutch painter, who is usually characterized as an abstract expressionist. Lataster, son of a miner, attended the Applied Arts School in Maastricht. He then went to Amsterdam to study at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten (1941–2; 1946–8). Lataster is considered one of the so-called "Amsterdam Limburgers", which also includes Pieter Defesche, Jef Diederen and Lei Molin.
In 1963, Lataster, together with Mari Andriessen, Nic Jonk, Theo Mulder and Wessel Couzijn, founded the alternative art training Academy `63 (later called Atelier `63) in Haarlem, now located as De Ateliers in Amsterdam. The motivation for this initiative was the desire to meet the need of young artists to work for a period under critical guidance from more experienced artists. Well-known works by Lataster are the painting 'Children Playing' (1954, commissioned by the municipality of Heerlen) and the monumental ceiling painting for the Mauritshuis in The Hague ('Icarus Atlanticus', 1987-88). His work is represented in a large number of museum collections at home and abroad, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Lataster is one of the most successful Dutch artists of his generation.
