Jan Ouwersloot was a self-taught artist. He painted landscapes, harbors and cityscapes. The National Bureau for Art Historical Documentation classified him as part of the painting movement “The Populists” because he often painted subjects from his own environment and daily life in a naive realistic style. He was a member of “The Independents” from 1927 to 1964. Ouwersloot also made topographical fantasy representations in which, for example, he playfully combined sights from the Amsterdam street scene in a painting. Despite all his merits, including participation in exhibitions in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Ouwersloot has fallen into oblivion. Fortunately, the MORE museum also recently discovered it.
