About this work: “Jan Toorop signed his prophetic work Thirst for Justice on the eve of the twentieth century, which would become the century of the workers, the fourth estate. At that moment it was already twenty years ago that Vincent van Gogh sketched his gloomy scenes from the hopeless life of the miners. But now an unstoppable enthusiasm and a surefire hope for a better life pervades all of Europe. The Netherlands is also being shaken up by this.” -The original is in Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam (63 x 76 cm).
Information about the artist: Johannes ('Jan') Theodorus Toorop (Poerworedjo (Indonesia) 20 December 1858 – 3 March 1928 The Hague) is considered one of the most talented Dutch artists from the period around 1900. Just like Piet Mondriaan, Jan Sluijters, Leo Gestel and Kees van Dongen he contributed enormously to the development of modern art in the Netherlands. Jan Toorop took drawing lessons at the Polytechnic School in Delft (1876-1879). He studied at the State Academy of Art in Amsterdam (1880-1882) and at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Brussels (1882-1885). In the Netherlands he became the leader of the Jugendstil movement. He converted to Catholicism in 1905, after which he painted almost exclusively religious subjects and portraits in his 'linear idealism', a religiously oriented Art-Nouveau style, turning towards Symbolism with his refined drawing style and technical virtuosity. .
