This work is a Chinese collé etching from the art dealership of PJ Zürcher in The Hague and printed and signed by Henri Koetser. The image is by Theophile de Bock.
Théophile Emile Achille de Bock (The Hague, January 14, 1851 - Haarlem, November 22, 1904) was a Dutch painter belonging to the Hague School. De Bock was initially an official with the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij. He received his painting training from Jan Willem van Borselen and Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch. The painter Jacob Maris was the great example for De Bock. Between 1878 and 1880 he was affiliated with the Barbizon School, whose influences can also be found in his work. In 1881 he contributed to the Panorama Mesdag by Hendrik Willem Mesdag. He painted the sky and the dunes in it. As an alternative to Pulchri Studio, the Haagsche Kunstkring was founded in 1891 on the initiative of the Bock. In 1902 de Bock was one of the founders of Pictura Veluvensis in Renkum. He was also a member of the Sint Lucas artists' association in Amsterdam. Théophile de Bock passed away at the age of 53. De Bock mainly focused on the Dutch landscape, such as the dolmens in Drenthe. His landscapes are often heavy and gloomy.
Henri Koetser lived from 1878 to 1952. He lived and worked in Maastricht and Amsterdam until 1900, Emmen, London, Blaricum, Laren, Barneveld and Hilversum. He was a student of the State Academy of Amsterdam under August Alleb and CL Dake. By profession he was an art dealer and also a painter of interiors, with figures and landscapes. He became famous for his etchings after paintings by, among others, Jacob Maris.
PJ Zürcher was active in The Hague from 1904 to 1910 at Noordeinde 33 (formerly the gallery of Frans Buffa & Zonen).
Chine-collé or chine collé is a printing technique in which the image is transferred to a surface that is glued to a heavier carrier during the printing process.
