Anne Roorda (1955)

Anne Roorda (1955)

Anne ROORDA (Aalst, 1955), lives and works in Eindhoven.

The relationship between painting and poetry is central to AB Roorda's work. For example, Roorda describes images in his poetry and depicts poetry in his painting/sculpture. He himself says about this "Images to be rode and text to be seen". The reason for this development was the many journeys he made on the African and Asian continent. During these travels he visited locations where the transition from painted or drawn image to writing is still visible. His travels were time travel. He eventually ended up with rock painting and drawing from 10,000 BC. , which can still be found in bright daylight in the heart of the Sahara (Tassili N'Adjer, Algeria/Libya).

Initially, he gave shape to this theme in an abstract-expressionist way, using fundamental principles of painting. From 1996 there is a turning point in his painterly approach. The abstract – lyrical approach now transitions into a more conceptual – lyrical approach.

Roorda herself says about this: "By making conscious use of opposites in my work I realize a tense poetic reality based on fundamental painterly principles. In this way I connect the concept with the impulsive act, the figuration with the abstraction, the consciously chosen sign - like a memory of a distant past - with the dripping of the paint, the matter with the emptiness finally”.

The leitmotif, which runs like a thread through his entire oeuvre, is the fragility of all things. Roorda bases this on his social involvement and his philosophical vision. Both form the prelude to his work.

Finally, Roorda says about his work: "We see what you don't see and we don't see what everyone sees. As far as I'm concerned, a definitive value or meaning is therefore alien to the essence of my paintings. My work can be seen as an infinite movement of light in space Time forms the basis for this movement and bears witness to the intrinsic emptiness of things.

Education University of the Arts, Utrecht (1976-1980) Study trips: Morocco, West Africa, Tunisia, Europe, Asia (1984 – 1993)
