Barend Ferwerda (1880-1958)
Ferwerda, Barend; born Amsterdam April 3, 1880, died. Heelsum December 27, 1958. Lived and worked in Amsterdam, Ruurlo, Ede 1903, Leersum 1904, Renkum after 1905, Heelsum. Pupil of CE van Dapperen in Baarn, of GHC Overmans in Amsterdam and afterwards of the Rijksakademie there (1899 - 1902) led by R. Stang. Painted, drew, etched and lithographed mainly landscapes (Veluwe) and landscapes in Scandinavia, where he enjoyed working. Also other subjects such as still lifes and flowers. The work of Barend Ferwerda shows a rapid development from academically influenced painting to its own free and loose interpretation. When he settled with his wife in Renkum in 1905, he developed further into a productive, extremely colorful painter with a varied brushwork and technique. This is why he is called a colorist and tonalist. His drawings are smoothly and accurately portrayed, his etchings and lithographs are detailed. He was a member of 'Arti et Amicitiae' in Amsterdam, of 'Pictura Veluvensis', of the association 'Rhijn-Ouwe' and of 'Punt 62' For over 50 years, Barend Ferwerda has played an important role in the cultural environment of Renkum-Heelsum with as a common thread the 30-year period as a committed and honest administrator in the art association Pictura Veluvensis. After De Bock, Barend Ferwerda, together with M_nninghoff, tried to keep 'Pictura Veluvensis' alive, but unfortunately had to conclude that with the departure of Dankmeyer, Kuypers and many other artists from Renkum and Oosterbeek, the viability of the association disappeared.
