Douglas Swan (1930-2000)

Artist

Douglas SWAN (1930 - 2000)

Douglas Swan was born in Connecticut/USA in 1930. In 1936 the family moved to Scotland. Swan studied at Dundee College of Art, among others, and received several grants. He has worked and lived in Bonn and Scotland since the 1970s. The artist died in Bonn on June 7, 2000.

Douglas Swan often preferred simple everyday objects such as bicycles, shoes, saucepans, brushes or brooms as motifs. The triviality of these useful things fascinated him. Something like the poetry of everyday life dominates in his works. Swan also painted the Bonn cityscape with his very own handwriting, for example the Hofgartenwiese and the baroque university. He has repeatedly addressed his closeness to music, for example in a cycle on the major and minor keys or with Beethoven as part of his "Bonn Variations".
