Elly Strik was born in 1961 in The Hague. She studies at the Minerva Academy of Visual Arts in Groningen and the Jan van Eijk Academy in Maastricht. Today Elly Strik lives and works in Brussels. Strik mainly draws and paints portraits of herself and people from her environment. She does this on large sheets of paper. The drawings and paintings are often larger than life size, so that on the one hand they evoke great intimacy, but on the other hand they have a very direct and confrontational effect. Her self-portraits are not traditional self-portraits: they are not realistic, although they often contain features of her own. Rather, they show the psyche of the person portrayed. In addition to portraits, she also chooses other motifs for her work, such as animals, trees, plants and rocks. She paints with highly diluted paint, so that as the subject is enlarged, the color intensity and outlines of the subject lose their intensity. Unlike her self-portraits, her paintings in which she depicts birds or landscapes are realistic and very precisely worked out.
