Frans van Veen (1950)
He received his education at the St. Joost Academy in Breda and at the Royal Academy of Art and Design in 's Hertogenbosch. Initially, he painted meticulously, in a hyper-realistic style. In this way he tried in particular to investigate the relationship between nature and culture. In 1977 he received the Royal Grant for Free Painting for this work. In the eighties he was able to work several times for three months in the studio of the Kröller-Müller Foundation in the South of France: the Maison Jaune. There my work evolved by drawing a lot in nature, from pure realism to my current, lyrical way of working. He has developed his own method in which he makes large paintings in pastels in the landscape, which later form the basis for the paintings in oil in his studio. A true plein air painter, he captures the intensity of the moment outdoors in nature in pastels, “sur le motif”, as Cézanne said. In these pastels he depicts the landscape in his own impressionistic way. In the expressive oil paints, he gives the experience of nature an extra dimension by means of a powerful brushstroke.

In these pastels I depict the landscape in my own more or less impressionistic way. I am happy when I am in nature and I want to show that with all the strength of my handwriting. When painting in my studio I use the pastels as a starting point. Then the imagination of the landscape is no longer the first goal. Then I want to embark on the great adventure of painting itself. Painting I then want to tell you about painting. I then tell with paint, the colors are my words. Loud and clear I want to speak, so I use bright colors in an emphatic and enthusiastic painting gesture.
