Godfried van Utrecht (1951)
Godfried van Utrecht (pseudonym of GJ (Fred) Verschuren), born 3-11-1951 in Utrecht, photographer, graphic artist, illustrator, painter. Godfried van Utrecht was educated at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (1971 -1976). In the years that followed, he gained fame for his labour-intensive, realistic pen drawings and oil paintings, which are characterized by a perfectionist technique. He works with oil paint on panel and his painting is built up very carefully, layer by layer. When a work is ready, he painted it four or five times in total. The realist Godfried van Utrecht was born and raised in the city of Utrecht, which he clearly shows in the choice of backgrounds in his paintings. In terms of style, his paintings are reminiscent of Carel Willink (1900-1983) and Pyke Koch (1901-1999), while a Moesman trait can also be found here and there. He later looked for other, less time-consuming techniques and drawing styles, and after a period of more expressive work, he eventually opted for a more illustrative approach to shaping his ideas. Photography has always been in second place next to drawing and painting. In addition to his artistry, he works as a freelance illustrator and designer. Since 1994 he has been affiliated with the Graphic Lyceum Utrecht as a subject teacher of 'visualizing' and 'model drawing'. In 1982 he received the 'Royal Grant for Free Painting'. Godfried van Utrecht took part in a large number of exhibitions at home and abroad, of which twice in the United States and twice at the International Art Fair in Basel, Switzerland.
