Gottfried HONEGGER (Zurich 1917 - 2015)
Honegger attended the Kunstgewerbeschule in his native Zurich at the age of fifteen. From 1937 he was attached to the same training institute as a teacher. He has been working as an independent artist (painter) since 1938.
In 1958 Honegger moved to New York, where he worked as an advertising artist. His first solo exhibition followed in 1960 at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York. This exhibition was then shown in Paris. In the same year, Honegger decided to return to Europe and devote his life to art. He worked in Zurich and Paris. Honegger was a painter and sculptor from 1968.
Honegger has exhibited extensively in Europe and the United States. He was a participant in the 1975 São Paulo Biennale in Brazil.
Together with Max Bill and Richard Paul Lohse, Honegger was one of the most important Swiss representatives of so-called concrete art (Art Concret). In 1990 he was the founder of the Espace d'Art Concret in Mouans-Sartoux, France. In 1997 Honegger created the art project Culur (Rhaeto-Romance for color) in Switzerland. An installation, consisting of 10 columns in the rainbow colours, 9 of which are placed on the dam and 1 in the valley near the village of Maloja in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. In 2010, Honegger's work was shown at the Stiftung für Konkrete Kunst Roland Phleps in Freiburg im Breisgau.
