Haaike Abraham Jaarsma (1881-1970)
Haaike was born on November 19, 1881 at the Helderse Binnenhaven. Immediately after his birth, his family returned to Schiermonnikoog, where he spent his early years. At the age of eleven he mustered as a cabin boy on the three_master ?Adriana? from his uncle. He would later depict this ship several times in his paintings. For four years he sailed between North and South America. After returning to the Netherlands, he went to the nautical school in Schiermonnikoog. During those years, the local painter TGG Fenega became his mentor for drawing and painting. In 1906 he became an apprentice pilot in Den Helder and sailed mainly on the Canal. From Brest to the Wadden Sea, he made sketches of ships and lighthouses that he would later incorporate into his seascapes. His favorite subject was the fishing boats he encountered at sea. He has painted them in hundreds of paintings in all weather conditions. The orders, which he received from fishermen and later also from captains and mates of the Grote Vaart, were a welcome addition to the pilot salary.
