Han Snel (1925-1998)
Han SNEL (Scheveningen 1925 - Bali 1998),
Han Snel studied at the Art Academy in The Hague, but his studies were interrupted by WWII. Immediately after the war, he left for Indonesia as a conscript, where he later converted to Hinduism and married a Balinese woman.
Han Snel mainly painted portraits, the Balinese landscape and indigenous women. He had great success with these subjects: his work was liked by foreigners, especially Japanese and Americans, as well as by Balinese. Former president Sukarno was also interested in his work. Later in life he also created a large number of abstract works. In addition to the paintings, he also made woodcuts. Literature: Haks/Maris 1995 , p. 249.
