Hermanus Marie Johannes MISSET (Amsterdam 1875-1958)
After being educated at the Drawing School for Art Crafts in the Jacob van Campenstraat, Misset worked from the age of fifteen as a house painter and wallpaper decorator. As a sideline, he drew and watercolored countless cityscapes, especially those that were endangered. But he also recorded details, such as rare facade types and facing bricks. He developed his own, well-recognizable drawing style. Partly due to the lack of people and vehicles, his drawings have a tranquil character. Misset received commissions from the Royal Antiquarian Society, the Municipal Archives and from various private collectors such as DC Meijer and J. van Eck. His most productive period was in the years 1899-1912. The archiveThe ?Kist Misset? The Municipal Archives contains more than 1000 sketches, which he regarded as his working material. This material mainly consists of architectural details, such as fronts, profile frames, special decorations, doors, windows and consoles. He made his elaborate watercolors on that basis.
