Biography
Johan Buning lived in Amsterdam all his life. As a self-taught artist, he painted and watercolored landscapes in Gelderland, North Brabant and Belgium, among other places. He is also known for his beautiful still lifes and figures. This late impressionist, with a great predilection for flowers and trees, was also a very clever watercolorist and also one of the founders of the Hollandse Aquarellistenkring. He was also a member of the Independents and Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam.

Buning exhibited in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (1939 and 1964), the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (1946 and 1953), Stedelijk Museum De Lakenhal Leiden (1962) and in the Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo and in the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. .
Buning's work is in the possession of: the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, Museum Bommel-van Dam in Venlo, the Suermondt Museum in Aachen, Museum Henriette Polak in Zutphen, the National Collection and various private and corporate collections.
