Marius Richters (1878-1955)
Marius Richters was, among other things, a painter, draftsman, graphic artist and glazier. He was educated at the Rotterdam academy for visual arts. He painted harbor scenes in his native city of Rotterdam. He also painted the polder landscapes around the city. Together with others, he founded the artist group De Branding. He was also a member of the artists' association R 33. He was one of the painters who were commissioned in 1918 to produce wall paintings for the Rotterdam council chamber.[1] Six paintings by Richters hang in the council chamber of the city hall in Rotterdam. Richters was an etcher and wood carver. As a graphic artist he made cityscapes, harbor scenes and religious prints. As a draftsman he made political prints, among other things. Shortly before the bombing of Rotterdam in World War II, Richters made a panoramic drawing of the city of Rotterdam from the tower of the town hall. As a glazier he makes stained glass windows for the Zuiderkerk in Rotterdam and the Sint-Janskerk in Schiedam.[2] During the bombing of Rotterdam, the Zuiderkerk was destroyed and Richters' glasses were lost.
