Steph Uiterwaal (1889-1960)
Stephan Uiterwaal, also called Steph, was a Dutch sculptor, draftsman and painter. Uiterwaal was best known for his religious sculptures. In 1903 he started working in the studio of Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg and later he worked for Gerard Bartel Brom and his son Jan Hendrik. There he came into contact with Catholic sculpture. Over the years he specialized as a stone and sculptor. When Uiterwaal returned to Utrecht he came into contact with Cubism. Although his stylized designs did not really appeal to the public, the Leerdam glass factory wanted to collaborate with Uiterwaal. In 1929 he made perhaps his most famous sculpture out of pressed, satin-finished glass for them: Madonna. Later, other religious images of his hand followed. In the same year he broke through and he still got a lot of work after the war.
